Should my Special Forces kit work on an '02 Explorer 4.6L ?

Postby chitown1211 » Mon Mar 14, 2016 2:18 pm

Hi all,

I recently sold my '02 Mustang so I wanted to tune my '02 Explorer. I still have two bullets.

Problem is the tuner won't read the stock Explorer tune. It always worked great with my Mustang.

Here's what's happening when I try to read the stock Explorer tune:

1. Plug cable into OBD connector. (all 7 lights show up as normal)
2. Press B (right) button until only 5,6,7 are lit. (7 is red)
3. Press A (left) button. 3 and 4 start to flash as they should and I quickly turn the key to the start position.
4. Nothing happens after that. 5,6,7 light up, but the lights never start to scroll and the dash doesn't light up the way it normally would when reading or uploading a tune. I just end up unplugging it after a few minutes. I've waited as long as 15 minutes, but the lights never scroll back and forth.

Any help MUCH appreciated.

Regards

In 2002 Ford started to change the type of processor they used in their vehicles. It's possible you may have one of the newer or a hybrid of the eec-v processor. If you can provide me the 4 digit computer box code I can check and let you know.
If the vehicle still has the older eec-v processor then the other possibilities are:
- there could be an aftermarket chip plugged into the J3 connector
- something wrong with the Interface box
- poor battery voltage in the vehicle
